Healthy Through Proper Sleep: Why Sleeping On The Left Side Is Healthier

Sufficient sleep is essential for survival: but not only the duration, but also the sleeping position is relevant for a healthy life. Experts could prove that it is better to lie on the left side of the body.

Do you prefer to sleep on the right side? You should change that: Healthy sleep is important for humans.

Healthy sleep can reduce a considerable amount of stress. In addition, the body recovers in a state of rest and regeneration is promoted.

Those who sleep enough are rested and can start the day fit. Tasks that arise are increasingly easier once you have a healthy sleep. But does it make a difference on which side you sleep? Which sleeping position is the healthiest?

Finding the right sleeping position

“People who snore often sleep on their back or on their right side”, says Prof. Kneginja Richter. She heads the sleep consultation hour at the Clinic for Psychiatry and Psychotherapy at the Paracelsus Medical Private University (PMU) Nuremberg.

According to the article from LA weekly, the healthiest position is to sleep on the left side.

Therefore you should not sleep on the right side
John Doulliard is a doctor. He published an article in “The Journal of Clinical Gastroenterology” which gets to the bottom of the healthiest sleeping position.

He gives several reasons why sleeping on the right side can be unhealthy.

Heart and blood circulation: Your aorta, also known as the aorta, branches off from the heart to the left. If you sleep on the right side, your heart has to pump the blood “uphill”, so to speak.

If, on the other hand, you sleep on the left side, the pumping function of your heart is actively strengthened.

Stomach and pancreas: The pancreas and stomach are on the left side of your body. If you lie on your right side, your stomach presses on the pancreas. This hinders its function and activity.

Spleen and lymphatic system: As soon as you sleep on the left side, waste products in your body are filtered out faster and better. This is because the most important task of your lymphatic system is to transport important nutrients and filter out waste products.

Together with the spleen, which is also responsible for cleansing your blood and is located on the left side of your body, the waste products reach it particularly quickly – if you lie on your left side!

Do you suffer from heartburn? Statistically speaking, people who sleep on the right side of their body suffer from heartburn (reflux) about twice as often. Left-sleepers, on the other hand, suffer significantly less.

The study explains this as follows: Edible acid is located on the right side of the stomach.

If you turn to the right while sleeping, it is easier for the chyme to flow back into the esophagus. This causes increasingly unpleasant stomach pains.
